2023 award:
REBEKAH IJEOMA OPARA, THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN
Rebekah is currently enrolled in a PhD programme at the faculty of law, University of Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria, and her research seeks to understand the legal and institutional frameworks that govern the registration and identification of persons by the Nigerian state, how such identities are managed, and how these frameworks affect human development and inclusion in the Nigerian society. This is to address the challenge of insufficient data on the population of this country, where over 100 million people have never been formally registered by the State. These people, as Rebekah explains “do not have any form of identity and are thus ‘invisible’ to the government and often excluded from development initiatives.

Overview of the scholarship
Access to education is a fundamental tool for development and increased prosperity in any community or society, and this is also true in the African context, where one of the major issues is the lack of skilled professionals to manage the policies, institutions and economies.
Education exclusion exists at various levels, and whilst a lot has been done to increase elementary school enrolment, exclusion at secondary and tertiary levels is considered a major challenge in many African countries. The most affected group are women, with as few as 1% of women in some regions being enrolled in tertiary education, and those already enrolled need access to financial resources to succeed academically.
Evidence suggests that millions of girls, who face numerous challenges such as sexual harassment or expectations of early marriage, drop out of school after elementary level and, as a result, have limited opportunities in the future to gain economic independence and agency.
Although there are some programmes supporting female students in STEM subjects, limited support is given to those in “non-STEM” subjects, including broadly defined social sciences and humanities; economics and finance; political studies; law; accounting; public policy; business studies; philosophy and music to name but a few.
To address this gap, I am offering a selected student (see below) financial support of 500 GBP (Pound Sterling) to contribute to student expenses and the total of 4 hours of free Zoom supervision with me.
* This scholarship would not have been possible without your kind donations to my Buy Me A Coffee page. To show gratitude to my supporters, all supporters will be listed on the official scholarship award page that will appear here on the date of the award, as well as listed on my other social media.
To be considered, you need to be:
- A female, African student currently enrolled in a research-based postgraduate university degree (a degree involving a unique supervised research project) in an African higher education institution in a “non-STEM” field of study.
- You have started or are about to start your programme (documentation will need to be provided by the selected candidate).
- You are doing, or planning to do, a qualitative research project as part of a requirement towards your degree.
Â
Application process:
Send your application in an MS Word file as an email attachment to qualitativeresearcher@outlook.com
In the application:
- Briefly introduce yourself. Tell me about yourself and your field of study, as well as your career plans
- Tell me about research you are undertaking or planning to undertake. It’s ok not to have a fully formed research plan, I still want to hear it! (and if your application is successful, we will specifically work on this research idea)Â
- Explain briefly how you would use the scholarship
- Include your full name and details of your institution and department
Applications will be open until 24:00 BST, Wednesday 31 May 2023, and the selected candidate will be announced and contacted on Thursday 15 June 2023
